Steven Mahan of Lynn Haven, Florida

July 30, 2020

Fellow members,

It is my sad duty to inform you that, on Sunday, July 26th, our friend and fellow referee, Steve Mahan, suffered a fatal heart attack while at his home in Lynn Haven. Steve was 65.

Steve officiated soccer in Bay County and throughout the state of Florida for over twenty years. And, over the course of that long and prominent referee career, he was appointed to numerous regional administrative and training positions by the Florida State Soccer Referees Association (FLSRC). Steve was also a founding member of this association and served tirelessly as its treasurer for over ten years.

Whether it was related to his career as an accomplished electrical engineer or as a learned student of the Laws of the Game, Steve was a ‘details’ guy. He approached every technical challenge the same way: Learn everything there is to know about every aspect of the problem, issue or obstacle, develop the best strategy to address, solve or resolve it and never forget a single detail about the whole effort – just in case he, or anyone he knew – ever encountered that same problem, issue or obstacle again. Steve was a ‘character’ in the absolute best sense of the word.

Steve was an especially smart guy, a dedicated husband, parent, grandparent and a selfless supporter of the soccer community, at large – and he will be sincerely missed.

His services, subject to limited attendance, will be held on Sunday, August 2nd. The details regarding those services will be in his obituary, which is scheduled to appear in the local paper tomorrow, July 31st. The association will send an arrangement and/or a donation to a charity of his family’s choosing.

Sincerely,

Jack Anderson,

on behalf of the Board of Directors of the
United Senior Association of Referees
