Brendan Barry National Referee Coach of the Week Feb 8th


Brendan Barry was self-employed at Irish Business Solutions Inc. ( and is the owner of Paddy Barry’s Irish Pub & Restaurant ( in Virginia.

His referee experience in Europe was filled with national and international appointments.  From 1975 to 2000, Brendan refereed under the jurisdiction of the Football Association of Ireland ( F.A.I.) from underage grass roots to the Professional League of Ireland (LIO).  Brendan spent 17 years in the LIO.

In 1995 he was appointed as one of 6 Referees to the Ireland FIFA panel and officiated in Iceland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Germany, and many other European countries under UEFA.

From 2000 to 2009 Brendan was appointed as a new referee mentor / assessor initially working with newer referees and eventually working with two of the biggest amateur leagues in Dublin before getting involved with the F.A.I’s School of Excellence referee development program.

Having moved to Arlington, VA in 2009 to get married, he was appointed as a State Assessor by US Soccer in 2010.  In 2011 he was promoted to National Assessor and continues to serve the US Soccer Referee Program in the current capacity as National Referee Coach.

The year 2013 was a turning point as he was appointed to assess 22+ games in US professional leagues including MLS, Open Cup, NASL, NWSL, USL and PDL. Brendan is now a PRO match officials assessor.

Over the past 8 years, he has attended numerous US Soccer Developmental Academy events and various US Soccer tournaments as an assessor, mentor, and ID observer.

He said in his professional and referee experiences he has acquired an extensive knowledge of the professional level of soccer, knowledge of analytical processes, and he possesses strong organizational skills.

In July 2018 Brendan moved to live in Davenport, FL with his wife Susan.  He has stated that his mission in life is to be happy ( with my family and friends ) and develop as many young referees, no matter what age and grade they are, and he wants to put as much enjoyment back into the game as he has received from the game.
